What is a baby ID bracelet?

It is a bracelet made of a flat link chain and a smooth plate engraved with a first name, often with a date on the back. In France it is a traditional gift for a christening or a first communion. The baby version is simply a miniature one, designed for a tiny wrist.

It plays two roles. The first is emotional: it says « welcome » with the child's name. The second lasts much longer: you keep it, take it out again and show it to the child once grown up. Few birth gifts travel through so many years.

How to choose a baby bracelet

Three things really matter: the material, the size and the quality of the engraving. The rest is a matter of taste.

A gentle material for delicate skin

A baby's skin is thin and reactive. Avoid cheap metals that contain nickel and tarnish quickly. Our Identité personalized baby bracelet is made of 316L surgical stainless steel with an 18k fine gold finish, or silver-tone. This steel is hypoallergenic, waterproof, does not rust and does not tarnish. To understand why it is so stable, the Wikipedia page on stainless steel explains how chromium protects it from corrosion.

An adjustable chain that grows with the child

A newborn's wrist and a three-year-old's have nothing in common. That is why the chain of our Identité bracelet is adjustable: you set it snugly at first, then loosen it month after month. It follows the child from the first months to the first years, instead of becoming too small after a few weeks.

A clean, readable engraving

On a small plate, space is precious. A short name reads better than a long sentence. Each bracelet is engraved by hand in our Paris workshop after you order. Unsure about the length of your text? Write to us before ordering, we are happy to help.

Our advice: choose a simple, well-finished bracelet rather than a busy design. It is a piece the child will look at in twenty years, so it has to stay beautiful.

What to engrave on a baby ID bracelet

Everyone asks this question, and there is no wrong answer. Here are our customers' favorite engravings.

  • The first name alone: simple, readable, timeless. The most popular choice.
  • Name and date of birth: the name on the front, the date on the back when possible, as tradition has it.
  • The christening date: for a bracelet given by a godparent.
  • A short word: « Welcome », « Our treasure », the parents' initials.
  • A tiny symbol: a crown, a heart, two little feet, a cross for a christening. Our photos show several examples.

Two golden rules. Check the spelling three times, especially for compound names and accents: a personalized piece is made just for you and cannot be returned. And keep the date short (12.03.2026 rather than 12 March 2026) so it stays readable.

At what age can a baby wear a bracelet?

Many families give it at birth or at the maternity ward. In practice, parents often keep it for special moments during the first months (photos, christening, family visits), then let the child wear it more often as they grow.

A few common-sense precautions, true for any child's jewelry:

  • a baby only wears jewelry under an adult's eye;
  • remove the bracelet for sleep, naps and daycare;
  • check the clasp and chain regularly;
  • adjust it neither too tight nor too loose, so it cannot slip off the hand.

There is no rush: a bracelet given at birth can wait a few months in its box. It will be all the more moving the day the child really wears it.

Baby girl or baby boy: gold-tone or silver-tone?

The ID bracelet is one of the few truly unisex pieces. Whether you are shopping for a baby girl or a baby boy, it is the color and the engraving that make the difference.

  • Gold-tone is warm and recalls the traditional gold bracelet. Very popular for little girls, and more and more for boys.
  • Silver-tone is more discreet and very soft on fair skin. Often the choice of parents who love minimalism.

A good tip: look at mom's jewelry. If she wears gold, a gold-tone bracelet will make a lovely pair in family photos. Our Identité bracelet comes in both colors, at the same price of €39.

Adding a birthstone to the bracelet

Our customers love this idea: hanging a small birthstone charm in the color of the baby's month. Our birthstones are colored cubic zirconia, one shade per month, gold-tone or silver-tone. They add a touch of color and one more meaning to the piece.

Who gives it, and when?

Traditionally, godparents gave the bracelet for the christening, which Wikipedia describes as the first Christian sacrament. Today it is given at many other moments:

  • at birth, by grandparents or close friends;
  • at a christening or naming ceremony, by the godparents;
  • for a first birthday, when the child starts wearing it for real;
  • for a first communion, once the child has grown;
  • when a little brother or sister arrives, so the older one has a bracelet too.

If several people want to join in, the gift is easy to complete: the birthstone charm from an aunt, a piece for mom from dad. It becomes a real family treasure.

And for the new mom? Matching jewelry

We often think of the baby and forget the woman who just brought them into the world. A small piece for mom, matching the bracelet, always touches the heart. We wrote a whole article about it: birth gift for the new mom. Here are four pieces often given with a baby bracelet.

Mistakes to avoid with a baby bracelet

After years of advising families in our Marais boutique, here are the small mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.

  • Engraving a text that is too long. On a baby plate, a long sentence becomes unreadable. Keep the name large and put the rest on the back.
  • Forgetting an accent. Hélène, Zoé, Anaïs: reread letter by letter. It is the most common mistake, and it cannot be undone.
  • Choosing a fixed chain. Wrists grow very fast in the first months. An adjustable chain avoids a bracelet that is too small after a few weeks.
  • Buying a metal that tarnishes. Cheap jewelry can mark the skin and lose its color. Surgical stainless steel stays beautiful and suits sensitive skin.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Each bracelet is engraved after you order. For a christening or a party, order ahead to stay relaxed.
  • Letting the baby wear it at night. Keep it for special moments, under an adult's eye, then put it back in its box.

Torn between two engravings or two colors? Visit our boutique or write to us before ordering: we will gladly help you find the right engraving.

How to care for a baby bracelet

Good news: stainless steel needs very little care. A few habits keep the bracelet beautiful for years.

  • Rinse it with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth after bath time.
  • Avoid household products, chlorine and perfume directly on the piece.
  • Store it in its box or a pouch, away from other jewelry, to avoid scratches.
  • Check the clasp from time to time, especially if the child wears it often.
